Samcholing Tea Cooperative, Trongsa

Ingredients grown and processed for the #SecondCampaign are:
Green Tea and Black Tea
The green and black tea is produced from Camellia sinensis, an evergreen shrub which is believed to have been brought to Samcholing from Darjeeling during the era of Bhutan’s Second King. Once planted to produce local tea leaf, its production subsided over the years because of cheaper, imported teas. In 2011, a group of enterprising women formed the Samcholing Tea Cooperative and revived tea cultivation in Samcholing on over 50 acres of land. Since 2018, the Samcholing Tea Cooperative is local organic (LOAS) certified.
The Samcholing Tea Cooperative is the only tea production initiative in Bhutan. Tea from Samcholing is renowned for both its flavour and the all-natural processing of tea leaves. A manufacturing unit was established in 2009 with the financial support of GENTEC University, Republic of Korea and Royal Government of Bhutan. Recently, the group started a partnership with the nearby Samcholing High School to introduce young students to tea cultivation and processing.
